Charming place

What this place lacks in amenities it more than make up for in uniqueness and charm. The owners are amazing and so helpful. They are honest about the two star rating but you feel as if you are staying with family. Extremely clean.comfortable bed. This is an old place built in the early 1900’s. This couple got it and saved it from being bulldozed by a Major hotel chain. We would stay here again easytoget to places on Hilo side of Island.

This is a very unique place with many exciting touches to it. We loved sitting in the lobby area and seeing the cat and enjoying the rain. Breakfast was wonderful with local flavors. Lee the hostess was the best. She recommended many things to us and made sure everything and everyone were happy.

Convenient, Clean and Charming

We were greeted by Lee and received a wonderful aloha welcome for our one night stay. She and her husband are fairly new owners there so the place is still in transition. There are amazing artwork pieces in the lobby area promising more great things to come. Two sweet cats wander about. Breakfast was nicely presented (good coffee, muffins, bagels, croissants, papayas and pinepple, etc.) and there are several comfy areas to sit throughout the hotel with water views. The hotel location is convenient to downtown. We were in room 30 on the lower level at the end. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The noise level in the room however was tough to tolerate due to several factors. The property is just off the busy main road so there was constant car noise, the refrigerator motor was super loud going on and off throughout the night, the coquis (frogs) were really loud, and planes fly low overhead.

Old Hawaiian Hotel is Spot On

Tracy's greeting was wonderful and welcoming. Her explanation of the accomodations was right on. Well maybe 15 minutes rather than 8 minutes for the hot water to kick in. Very nice continental breakfast. Room was quite simple with plenty of room and clean. No TV which was not a problem for me. A small microwave would have been a nice addition.

Easily 5 / 5 stars plus 5 bonus stars

This place is charming, it has history, it's colourful, warm and welcoming, the owners are lovely, so helpful, positive and have created a wonderful atmosphere. My room was perfectly nice and clean, and the bed was super comfortable, the window faced the jungle and I loved listening to all sorts of sounds before going to sleep. I don't care about water pressure in the shower, original features are more important. Breakfast amazing, of fresh fruit and bagels and unlimited coffee, in the relaxing open air lobby area with comfortable seating. Wifi great everywhere. The garden is a bit wild, as it should be. I felt very much at home. It seems to attract a certain type of guests, i.e. all really nice and friendly people. And I bet most of them would pick the same place if they come back to Hilo. I certainly will. I wish I could have stayed longer.

Hotel is very comfortable. A little old, but has so.much character. Very very friendly owner. Lots of wooden Hawaiian statues and plaster art decorated in lobby. All made by owner. Full breakfast was nicely decorated. Lots of tropical fruits, bagels, muffins, crescents. Various drinks. Walking distance to downtown. The garden cats give it a homely feeling.

Missing the tikis already...

This hotel was utterly adorable, and the host incredibly friendly and helpful. The large airy common space, under roof but open to the outside, is charming and comfortable - we spent a lot of time there late and early, working (wifi!), eating our take-out from the easy walking distance restaurants Lee (correctly!) recommended, and enjoying the included tropical fruit and pastry breakfast in the morning. The tiki sculptures, host-made, were the absolute best! (They might be taking over.) The room was basic and no frills, but comfortable - reminded me of summer camp, but with a good bed and private bath, and the rainforest sounds put us right out. As a bonus, Lee gave us coins for the laundry room, so that was easy. It is a historical building and the current owners are only 6 months in, and it does need, and they are doing, renovations. We loved our time there, and are very much looking forward to coming back and seeing what they do with the place - I bet it will be great (and I hope they won't hesitate to charge more then - they deserve it).

The owner lady was very friendly and provided us a lot of good sightseeing information. The breakfast is gorgeous with fruits, drinks, bagels, muffins, etc.

A work in progress with potential!

The good: charming, great breakfest,friendly hosts great location, clean. The bad: no internet rm 31, windows wont close, road noise, mattris old and uncomfortable, breaker tripped, long time for hot water, no sugar for coffee, no tv, door bath barely latched no lock. Place needs a handyman.
