If you can spend the money...this is the place to stay! The staff is amazing, the hotel was immaculate, the spa was delightful...I just really enjoyed this hotel...not to mention FREE MINIBAR!!! Amazing!

Amazing bed.. Great quiet room, loved the free mini bar-:) made our trip !

The Grand Hotel Amrath was a very nice Hotel with good service. It's about a 8 minute walk from the train station and 5 minutes away from the Red Light District and Inter-City Trams. It's actually a good location because it's not in the heart of the action but quickly accessible to all the action and tourist sites. The concierge and staff were more […] than helpful in identifying the usual and unusual destinations: restaurants, haircuts/salons, museums. There was only one small problem and it's really out of the control of the hotel. The place was a maze! It took me a while to find my room the first day but the service and proximity to the heart of the city more than made up for that. My husband and I decided last minute to go to Amsterdam to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The original hotel we chose was fully booked, so we settled on The Grand Hotel Amrath. Wow were we surprised! I have never been so happy to settle for my second choice! The location is amazing, close to great restaurants, around the corner from the red light […] district and about a 10 minute walk to the museums. We were upgraded from a junior suite city view to the oriental suite. It was incredible, with 2 sitting areas, a free mini bar, a huge bathroom with a great tub and a giant rooftop terrace overlooking all of Amsterdam! Three things stand out about this hotel: 1) the architecture, 2) the free minibar, 3) the fastest Internet I have ever seen in a hotel, and the internet was free, too. A refreshing change from most business hotels I have the pleasure to stay in.

Generally a nice hotel....interesting architecture and fair size rooms by european standards. Quiet. Very close to central station and all public transportation. Close to tons of shops and restaurants, redlight, dam square within walking distance. This is an incredibly gorgeous hotel. Everything was perfect. If I had to make one recommendation it would be to look at the service in the hotel bar. One employee handling 30 people. Great Hotel: Best bed so big and comfy.. ! the Buliding used to be a shipping company offices, it character added to the old school feeling of the city. Great location. Love the Spa area at night. Great location close to everything and professional service by hotel staff. I believe the hotel is a bit over-rated as five star though; seemed more like a four star due to some minor maintenance issues. Breakfast was good, but over priced as with most hotel foods. This hotel was gorgeous, make sure you go to the top of the steps! Hotel room was lovely. The big dissappointment was the service. In the bar there is only ever one person serving, and two in the restaurant, so be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait. Not 5* Service - that's for sure!!!!

A short walk from central station, excellent food, free wifi, fine pool, large room, competitive price and a complementary drinks cabinet including the contents. Red lights near but easily avoided. Also Vapiano and Bimhuis within walking distance and few tourists.

This is a great hotel. I is perfectly located for getting everywhere in Amsterdam. The rooms are so big and comfortable. The mini bar is free. The service is incredible. I would take a trip to Amsterdam just to be able to stay there. Walking distance to central station and you can get anywhere. Don't miss this hotel.

Great location but very expensive for what you get. Breakfast wasn't worth it at all. We ended up eating in the bar and it was great but still overpriced.

The Grand Hotel Amarath in Amsterdam was a classy and clean hotel...however the walls were paper thin and the lightening left a lot to be desired. There was great reading material in the room but we couldn't read it because the lighting was so poor. The other downside was the walls were so thin you could hear people's entire converstations as they were […] coming and going down the hall as well as doors opening and closing all hours of the night. The traffic outside also added to the noise level. On the "up-side" ...The location was fabulous. Just a couple of blocks to downtown, the train station and harbors. The hotel is located in a beautiful historical building. Our room was upgraded from a Deluxe room to Superior Deluxe and we were so pampered. The room includes an excellent bed and a wonderful bathroom. You get all the little things that make you smile and give your vacation just another notch, such as: an espresso machine, complementary minibar and […] WiFi and even an umbrella (in case it rains outside). Our visit to Amsterdam was only for 24 hours, so imagine our delight when we checked in and found out that we had been upgraded to Junior Suite! Just spent 5 nights here with a friend as a birthday celebration. We were not disappointed, our large and extremely comfortable room was on the 1st floor with a large en-suite, (bath and shower). Service was excellent, staff very attentive and friendly. We only ate in the hotel 1 evening as we preferred being out and about but the meal which we had […] in the bar was excellent. The hotel is ideally situated, 5 mins walk from Central Station, which was easily reached from Schiphol Airport, and walking distance to all the areas we wished to visit.. All staff spoke excellent English (as did everyone we spoke to in Amsterdam) which helped to make this a very easy and relaxed holiday. This was a brilliant hotel overall. The check in is unique due to the layout of reception. My allocated room was in the basement. I found the room to be dark, with a small window in the corner which didn't lock. I explained to reception and they upgraded me, for free, to a city view room on the 4th floor. This was superb. The room was comfortable, […] clean and the free minibar was excellent and provided very good value for money - containing half bottle red, half bottle white wine, 2 bottles coke, diet coke, sprite, still water, fizzy water, spirits, a chocolate bar, peanuts. This was replaced every day! When you add up the value of what is in the free minibar, consuming all of it every day almost pays for the entire stay at the hotel! Yet its free and replaced daily!! Excellent food, great pool, friendly mini-bar, room large by city-centre standards, clean, comfortable, walking distance of central station and other city centre attractions, good tram, bus, metro and rail links.

The staff are excellent and helpful and the rooms are nice (but expensive). Watch out for the "quiet room" designation. We were upgraded to a quiet room on the basement floor (I did not get a good answer as to what the designation meant - should we be quiet?). The room itself was fine but the floor was very NOT quiet at all - the staff door was right […] next to the room (#12) and at all hours the staff conducted their business - moving carts, taking out trash, talking on the phone, and moving/disposing bottles. It was a great hotel, they even gave us an upgrade to a suite. We travelled for 2 weeks and this was the best hotel we stayed in. It was also very close to everything we wanted to see.

Hotel is LOVELY decor, but, I had to live out of my suitcase because no drawers; shelves were available to unpack.... therefore, I had to spend time looking for things. There was a large shelf in the bathroom but no towel bars or hand rails! You're on your own in the shower...but at least you had a shower mat...I would prefer a more accomodating room […] for travel, but the bed was nice and the windows that opened and the quietness of the location was nice. This hotel did not measure up to my standards of a 5 star hotel. Whilst the location and the staff were first class the rooms were unusual. The first room we checked into was small with the bathroom facilities within 1 foot of the bed. The bathroom door on all rooms is glazed glass and has a small gap hence privacy was an issue when using the bathroom […] facilities. We asked to be moved to another room which was slightly larger without the bathroom right next to the bed, this was happily agreed to at a cost of an extra 30 Euro per night. The new room was an improvement however the shower screen was broken and despite 2 attempts to fix the hotel were unable to assist. We had previously stayed in other 5 star hotels in 3 other European countries and this did not measure up. This is a very nice hotel, the rooms are magnificent, the hotel is beautiful, the free mini-bar was awesome, wireless internet was fast. Just a bit warm in the rooms, so if you love air conditioning, this is not the place for you. The will bring a fan to the room upon request which was fine.

Although it is in a striking building the hotel does not make the most of it with a less than imposing lobby and reception area. Our room was a bit disappointing. There was not enough wardrobe space or hangers, The door to the bathroom had been removed, There were several lights out in the bathroom, The bedding although clean was worn with holes in […] both the duvet cover and a pillowcase. Simply put, the best hotel I have ever stayed until now. Very clean, great service, great location, the food in the restaurant and room service was delicious. I loved it!

you will need to improve the air conditioning systems if hot weather is going to be more the norm in the future, as it is predicted to be.

This was a great hotel. The hotel is close to the train station and convenient to take tram and bus to the other parts of town and sights. the room was small and not much of closet space so that i have to lay my big suitcase on the floor for the duration of the stays. the bathroom was nice and soaking my entire body in the deep bath tub after walking […] around the city was really soothing. I did not eat at the restaurant or drank in the bar and so I don't qualify to comment but It is convenient to have the restaurant in the hotel just in case. I figure that it is probably expensive. service was good and staffs are friendly. I heard from the people whom I met in Munich that the hotel they stayed near redlight district did not even have a soap. This is a really conveniently located and interesting hotel. Two things I found lacking were the temperature in the room (and the housekeeping staff kept opening the curtains and turning off the A/C) and the uninspired selections in the restaurant. REALLY comfortable bed and the free minibar is a nice touch!

we have done a lot of travelling over the world and this is easily one of the best hotels we ever stayed in. The room was enormous with a 4 post bed and floor to ceiling windows with remote controlled curtains. The complimentary minibar is a big plus as well. I stayed there with a buddy for 4 nights in mid July 2010. The hotel is very nice and comfortable. It's a 5 minute walk from the train station and is very convenient to all the sights of Amsterdam. The room was very large and the bathroom was quite nice too. The building was built in 1916 as a shipping company headquarters and still has all the nice […] original architectural details. Apparently it was just converted into a hotel 3 years ago. They did a nice job! The concierge was very helpful and friendly. My only complaint was that they gave us a room next to the original old elevators that run continuously just for nostalgia. (They are not available to use.) It was lovely. The decor was all it was promised to be. The free mini bar was just that ie free!! The bed & pillows ware the most comfortable I've slept in/on The staff were helpful, polite, & courteous.. All in all, fantastic.

This hotel was great. Location was perfect - 5-10 min walk from Central Station and close to all the sights. Free mini-bar was an unexpected bonus. Only issue was lack of air conditioning since it was really hot when we stayed, but we got a nice breeze by opening the window which kept things comfortable.

See previous comments. This was an entirely satisfying hotel stay. Classic "Ritz Carlton" type service with a refreshing level of informality, it was very comfortable. Very accommodating and friendly staff and centrally located near most of the tourist sites. Breakfast buffet was a little pricey (25 Euros), but was incredibly high quality food and great selection (fresh fruit, eggs, smoked salmon, bacon, fresh juices, pastry, etc.). This served as both breakfast and lunch, with a second visit to the buffet, so quite a bargain from that perspective. Central location and easy transportation from Schiphol Airport by train-less than three blocks from Centraal Station for 41/2 Euros. Near Red Light district, canal tours and restaurants. Although not cheap the Amrath is well positioned near Central Station and the red light district. The rooms have lovely beds, a coffee machine, free mini bar and wonderful shower in the bathroom. On arrival, very attentive concierge and valet parking service, fantastic location in an historic building that is a step back in time to 1930's Art Deco and beautifully restored inside and out.
