Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotel - San Diego

My husband and I had a great one night stay at Hotel Solomar, on a spontaneous drive down to San Diego. They made us and our dog Isa very welcome, no pet fee which is a pleasant rarity, pool bar on the roof. Perfect for a quick trip away from it all. The hotel is in the heart of the Gaslamp District, walkable to everything, and minutes from Petco Park. […] Awesome decor and ambiance, we will definitely stay again. Our only "compaints" were the unavoidable valet fee that seems standard in this area, and the pool bar not open as late as advertised. We stayed one week over the Christmas holiday. We travel with our Boston Terrier who was also made to feel extremely welcome by all of the staff. Bo, the night front desk associate was absolutely wonderful. So friendly and helpful.

The title summarizes it all. It's in a great neighbourhood, close to good restaurants. It's pet friendly, which is great. The people there are really nice and my only complaint is that my wake up call came 40min late - they're very laid back :)

Beautiful hotel with large, comfy rooms and great location - walkable to lots of great restaurants, bars, museums, etc. Food at the hotel restaurant was good and reasonably priced. They have complimentary wine from 4-5 and tea and coffee in the morning. Staff was very professional and friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. My two complaints would not keep me from staying there again. Despite being on the 7th floor, I found the noise from the poolside bar to be distracting at night. I like to rest in the evening before going out and that was difficult. My second complaint is that I hate the metered soap and shampoo dispensers in the shower. […] Come on, don't be cheap and give us the little travel size bottles like everyone else does! Was surprised by the $40 a night parking fee....room wasn't ready until well after 3:00 ...remodeling and entire hotel smelled of paint...except for the room. Bathroom sink was ridiculous - brushing teeth or washing face made entire vanity area soaked ...lighting in bathroom was horrible! Great location - was quiet in the rooms - gym was moved to a […] suite....antiquated equipment with no free weights or anything like that... Loved the hotel. Great location. Staff very friendly and especially enjoyed the complimentary wine at happy hour at 5pm.

Great location. Big, clean and modern rooms. Quiet surroundings, despite being very close to the Gas lamp quarter. Minibar with huge selection. Very helpful people at the front desk. Hotel is serving free wine between 5 and 6 pm.

The roof top pool was really warm--important when the air temp is in the 60o's. Loved the Wine and Appetizers every week night from 5:00-6:00. Enjoyed the J Six Restaurant--good food. Great location in the GasLamp District. Close to public transportation. We rented bikes across the street at Bicycle Revolution and took them on the ferry over to Coronado […] Island. This is the way to see the island. When you arrive on the ferry, you are about 1 1/2 miles from the "downtown" area of the island, so it really helped to have the bikes to get there easily. hotel staff were outstanding...furnishings in hotel were very tasteful. Close to downtown and the water. We were very pleased. Excellent hotel!!

We normally would rent a car on a holiday but this time we did for only one day. It is very easy to go almost anywhere by taxi and public transit, walk or bike. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and accomodating. If you have a pet then you are in luck as the hotel is very pet friendly as is San Diego

The Hotel Solamar is in the heart of the Gaslamp District and two blocks from the Convention Center. The top two floors are reserved for people who do not have pets in this pet-friendly hotel. Our top floor room had a jacuzzi and was very large and comfortable.

Nice boutique hotel. We stayed a day before new years and there was a party in the room next door. Luckily it did not last very late. Parking was expensive.

A great hotel and an awesome place for pets.

We have stayed at the Solamar several times and it has always been pleasant. The staff is very friendly and the hotel is convenient to the Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park, the Convention Center. The Gaslamp Quarter trolley stop is about a four-block walk. We have walked all the way to Horton Plaza on occasion. The afternoon wine tasting is a nice little […] bonus. Two minor complaints - the fitness room is a little tight, and the overnight parking charge (similar to other area hotels) is outrageous. If you can, ride the train into San Diego, catch the trolley to the Gaslamp, and walk to the hotel. That said, I would definitely consider the Solamar again when visiting San Diego. This is a nice place in a cool neighborhood. Staff was great, room service sucked. The guy who took our breakfast order was a jerk and I assume it was the same guy who delivered it because he was a jerk too. You'd think that 1 breakfast with 2 eggs, 2 pancakes 3 slices of bacon and a tea for $27 would be brought to by a nice person but what do I know, […] I'm the idiot who ordered a $27 breakfast. Definitely rates 4 stars, not 5, on how nice the place is put together. Rooms are clean with a great "anti-allergy" campaign they say they're doing. Modern renovations, great minibar, plasma flatscreen TVs. Great rooms for great price considering the Gaslamp is always overpriced. Staff is a little on the dull side. They wouldn't let me use a luggage […] cart on my own as if I didn't have half a brain. I also got a surprise on my credit card statement and found I had been charged twice for the room rate! Once by hotels.com and once by the hotel itself. I had to call the hotel and they said "oops" and they would refund me minus incidentals. The restaurant attached to the hotel is AMAZING! Looks like the hotel could use a little touchup, especially in the bathroom which had water damage + visible seams / sagging on the ceiling + stained grout at the shower & spa tub. Also, unless you are interested in staying up late and getting up early, don't stay in a room on the 4th floor looking out to the pool. Although those rooms have a nice […] balcony which other rooms do not, on the night we stayed, the pool bar stayed open with music clearly heard in the room till at least midnight, then the following morning the pool was filled with loud kids by 830 am! Also beware of super expensive valet parking: $36 / night when we stayed! Despite all of this, the hotel in general is in a great location, with lots of great shops around and extremely close to the stadium. The service / front desk was great and generous in giving us cocktail vouchers since we checked in too late for wine hour, the bed was very comfortable, and there were nice bathroom amenities including bath salts. You couldn't pay me to stay somewhere else! This is always my first choice when staying in downtown San Diego. Always the BEST customer service + random amenities (like hot coco, wine hour, dog beds...) that really set it apart from other hotels. Highly recommended

The good: The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is trendy European design. Pet friendly (we did not bring our dogs but enjoyed interacting with other guests pooches). The location is really convenient in the Gaslamp district. Very clean facilities. The not so good: Unfortunately, being in the Gaslamp district has a negative side. […] The hotel has nightclubs on three sides and for those of us who are not into clubbing, the bass beat is omnidirectional and penetrates until 2am. Hard to get to sleep. Technically there is little the hotel could do to improve on this, it is just the way things are! The sink in our room, while trendy, was quite high and sloped, and for a vertically challenged individual even brushing teeth was a tip toe exercise. Bottom line is overall I would give the hotel 4 stars out of 5. The hotel is quiet, however, it is located in a neighborhood full of bars and nightlife. We were awoken at midnight by the sound of dance music coming from an open rooftop bar/lounge located across the street from the hotel.

Stayed here for a before and love the place allthough fee's can add up quickly with mini bar, inteernet and parking, however a wonderful time, comfy bed, amazing service and walking distance to gaslamp favorites.

We had a great time staying at the Solomar. The room was very up to date, staff friendly and helpful and it's so close to everything you would want to do in Downtown San Diego. The only complaint we had was there is no jacuzzi. Not a huge deal but it was 50 degrees out so some nice relaxing jacuzzi time would have been nice. I would definitally stay […] here again. The Solomar Hotel is one of the greatest experiences I have ever had at a hotel. Our dogs were allowed, the hotel was huge, the staff was very accomadating and their pens are incredible!! I will stay there every time over any hotel!!!

very comfortable stay, nice touches like the daily wine reception, We checked in too late for it the first day and were handed a free drink voucher to use in the bar. Staff very welcoming and friendly, would recommend

We had a corner spa room on the 10th floor, no noise from the street, a bath tub to die for, a super comfortable bed and walking distance to nice restaurants and clubs.That was all me and my husband needed for this weekend's getaway!

The staff, decor, amenities and location of Hotel Solamar all exceeded my expectations. The one drawback (very minor issue) was the size of the room. It was a bit tight, but they did do a great job designing the room for maximizing the space available.

We had the Virtuoso Suite on the 7th floor. We were there on a Sunday and Monday night, but Monday was Halloween. Based on other reviews I was worried about street noise. Seven flights up we had no problems with noise. The staff was friendly and attentive. The suite was comfortable and lovely. The bathroom was a delight. great location near everything downtown, nice clean hotel with good amenities and hotel bar.

Great location, Amazing Staff, Lovely rooms. We thought the complimentary wine tasting was a lovely touch and a good way of meeting other guests we met some lovely people from Wales who shared some holiday tips. Breakfast at he Priory was amazing but noisy!! The only downside for us was the fact we couldn't use the pool bar at night as we had a 16year […] old with us which was a shame. My husband and I enjoyed a long weekend at this hotel. Pros; great location, nice veiw, wine service, helpful staff and dog friendly. Cons; loud on a weekend night, tiny gym and pool not as pictured (and is not to be used at night). We brought our bikes over and loved the central location. The hotel was very conveniently located near the convention center and all the of the restaurants and shops in the gas lamp district. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The swimming pool area was very nice. I would definitely stay here again.

Hotel is right where you to be for walking distance in the Gaslamp District. Hotel is nicely set up and staff is friendly and helpful when needed. The room was clean and very comfortable. I had a clear view looking down to the pool. Food and drinks were good and luckily had good weather to enjoy it. I have no complaints but if I needed to say something. […] My shower made a whistle sound at times when turned on but that was very minor. Hotel is a great chose when taking someone to impress. I loved this hotel! The location was perfect and the staff at the front desk was super helpful about finding restaurants and things to do. Not to mention the beds were amazing and the tub, too! I'd definitely stay again.
