"Gov Dinwiddie Hoter"
Very quaint old property that has been brought up to nice standards yet keeping the feel of days gone by. It is situated in a very nice part of town with a lot of nice places to eat. Very quite area and low traffic.
"Frequent Customer"
I have stayed at the Dinwiddie multiple times and each time has been enjoyable. I was greated warmly and check in was a breeze. The location is great. It is nestled in downtown Portsmouth close to your choice of restaurants and bars within walking distance. You can catch the ferry over to downtown Norfolk which is very nice also. This time I stayed […] in the King Suite which had a little kitchenette and separate seating area. When I'm in the area again, I will be sure to book my stay there again. Przeczytaj więcej
"The Hotel Gov. Dinwiddie in Portsmouth, Va"
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Not a very kid friendly for small children, built in the 20's there are no ramps to wheel strollers up the to the lobby level from the street or parking lot. There is a chairlift for handicapped patrons but you will need to get some from the lobby with the key to operate the lift. also not a place for light sleepers […] walls are a bit thin but considering the ago of this establishment it is to be expected. There are plenty of restaurants, sightseeing, and churches within walking distance of the hotel. Overall a good stay but I won't stay here with my children again.. Also the continental breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Breakfast in a paper bag? Little underwhelming if you ask me. Przeczytaj więcej
"Would stay again."
This hotel was a great deal. We had a very minor maintenance issue, but nothing worth noting specifically. I will definitely return here if I'm ever back in the area. It's in a slightly questionable area, but everyone, inside and out, were very friendly. Only about 15-20 minutes from Virginia Beach.
"nice and ample"
a nice hotel with a nice mexican restaurant right next door. bring your key card for a 10% discount. nice hotel and an affordable price. great service and friendly staff. make sure to get the free breakfast on your way out! Denzel is the man.

TV to small. The toilet would not flush after arriving. Called front desk and was told would have to move to another from. We took the cover off and checked the flusher and somehow got it to flush after multiple tries. Need to have more counter space in either the bathroom or kitchen area to prepare.
"Convenient, no pretensions"
I loved the expresso coffee machine in the lobby!

"Gov Dinwiddie — comfort and convenience"
We stayed at the Governor Dinwiddie while in town visiting family in Norfolk. We would definitely return. LOCATION: The hotel was pretty quiet in our room (6th floor) but was right in the middle of historic "Old Towne" part of Portsmouth with plenty of restaurants and bars right across the street. Since we were visiting family we didn't get to eat/drink […] at any of them this time but did grab menus and they looked great! It was very easy to get to the highways going anywhere else in the Norfolk area and parking was free and right behind the hotel. Neighborhood seemed safe enough although we took normal precautions (no electronics sitting out, etc.). Our family seemed concerned that the neighborhood used to have a bad rep but I don't think anyone who has lived in a city would be concerned at all at this point. Seems like a hip young crowd frequents the neighborhood and I loved it (even though we're not super young :-) ROOM: Room was not huge but was not cramped like some other historic hotels I've been in. There was a small "kitchenette" counter with sink and cabinet, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. All furnishings were clean and comfortable. Bedroom leaned more toward the historical without being "fussy" and bathroom was more modern with a deep tub and nice fixtures. While not SUPER luxurious it was VERY nice, clean and relaxing. I liked. AMENITIES: Unfortunately I didn't have time to check out the sauna which was one of the attractions to the Dinwiddie in the first place. Sigh... Next time. There was free, easy-to-access wireless internet and, as I mentioned, free and close parking (a plus over the other historic "Ascend Collection" hotel we looked into on the Norfolk side, The Tazewell). CONS: two - 1) we asked for a wakeup call one day and didn't get it. Could have been REALLY bad if we hadn't woken up on our own around the time we needed. I guess if you need to be up at a certain time set the alarm clock in the room too because I'm not sure why we d Przeczytaj więcej
"Lovely hotel"
This place was clean and comfortable, and the staff was super helpful and friendly. The only part I didn't like was the neighborhood. While it was within walking distance of some really nice shops, I was very wary of the people around me.
"Governor Dinwiddie Hotel, Portsmouth VA"
This is a very pretty little hotel. They did a great job remodeling it, updating with granite and other modern amenities while keeping history in mind, and it does not have that old building smell. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. The rooms are clean and comfortable. We had a 2 double bed, standard room. The beds were comfortable with lots […] of pillows and blankets, the plumbing worked well, and the towels were wonderfully soft. I loved having a little kitchenette with its own counter, cupboards, and sink, frig, microwave, and coffee maker. The only drawbacks to this hotel are that it is small and the pipes sometimes squeal when other guests shower. However, the squeaing pipes are not loud if you close the door to the shower room. The closet, toilet/shower, and vanity/sink areas are very tight and the hotel no longer has its own restaurant. There are plenty of good restaurants just outisde the door of the hotel though, and the area is one of the best in Portsmouth. That is important because Portsmouth has a lot of scary areas. I chose to stay in Portsmouth because my son is in the Navy, stationed on a ship that is in drydock there and living on a barge next to the ship. The hotel was just a few minutes away from the Naval shipyard, depending on traffic, so it was easy for my son to go back and forth and optimized our time together. My niece is in the Coast Guard there and says they house the visiting Captains and Generals at that hotel. There were also people staying there who had loved ones at the Naval Hospital that is about a half mile away. While there are coffee makers in the rooms, the lobby also has a one serving at a time, Starbucks coffee maker with all the coffee and tea accessories including real cream, a bowl of green apples, and breakfast bags for guests to pick up that contain a bottle of orange juice, a granola bar, and a muffin or pastry. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Portsmouth. Przeczytaj więcej
"A quaint old hotel with modern conveniences."
The main lobby is small but nicely decorated. I was greeted promptly and quickly checked in. Parking just a few steps from the front door, down the side street - an open lot restricted to hotel guests with a parking pass. My room, though smaller than what you'd find in a new hotel, had plenty of space for the king bed, desk, chairs, bedside tables and […] lamps, plus an armoire that held the TV. I had a corner room with three windows, and a built-in area with granite counter that contained the refrigerator and microwave. The bathroom was very nice, with granite counters and floors. I really liked this renovated old hotel, to include the historic old photos of Portsmouth in my room. Bed was comfortable. The only negatives I can remember are the TV (old and small, not a big flat panel like a newer hotel), and the "free" breakfast, which I understand is usually a brown-bag fruit and muffin or something, but was never offered to me. I didn't really need it, but still thought it should have been offered. Przeczytaj więcej
"Exceeded expectations."
This old hotel fits nicely with a downtown that is being revitalized. My wife grew up in the area and remembered this as an unsafe blighted area. Were glad it's changed.
"Pleasantly Surprised"
My wife and I wished we were staying more than one night. The hotel was in downtown Portsmouth amidst all the shops, restaurants in walking distance. Hotel desk recommended Baron's Pub (a local hangout) which was right down the street. We loved it. We intend to come back to Porstmouth for an entire weekend and we will definitely stay at the Dinwiddie […] when we do. Przeczytaj więcej
I felt uneasy with other people staying there 3 people told us they lived on the street and when they got enough money they spent anight there to do laundry and bath
"Gov Dinwiddie Hotel -Portsmouth Olde Towne"
The hotel was friendly and accomodating. The parking security will seem questionable, but no incident. The lighting could be studied for improvement. A visible security person would add to one's comfort level. Patron personal safety in the room might be studied: I am a six foot male whose head passes by the top "pointed" edge of the TV cabinet/chest […] of drawers. It's a tight turn to the bed. No one wants a bruise or injury during your stay. Reasonable rate for the area. Bag breakfast is ??????? Przeczytaj więcej

Great location to town/food/shops Breakfast included but brown paper bag style Staff friendly and helpful
"The governor dinwiddie hotel"
Nice, clean room..highy recommended
"great location"
If you like being able to walk to where the action is, this is a great location on the Portsmouth main drag. Room was a bit small but nicely equipped, the workout equipment was unimpressive, but guests have access to a real gym for a small fee. We were visiting family in Norfolk and the drive was quite easy, Would definitely stay again.
The lady that booked my room told me we would be four miles from virginia beach and it was more like fifteen and the smoke alarm started chirping at three in the morning so i did not get any sleep.

"A Jewel in a transitioning Portsmouth downtown"
The Govenor Dinwiddie was a choice made as a last minute decision to get out of town. It will be a first choice for future travel. It is located in downtown Portsmouth where, like many cities, the downtown area is not only becoming relevant, but vibrant. Much of downtown is still to be changed. Expect the Gov Dinwiddie to be a hallmark of what Portsmouth […] is becoming. The rooms are on par with four star hotels. As the building is old and renovated, the rooms are not large, but big enough. They are well appointed; wet bar, microwave, refrigerator. The bed was very comfortable. The configuration does not lend it to the hot breakfast areas travelers have come to expect. Don't let that stop you. Travel to Virginia Beach is simple. There are diverse restaurants in walking distance. Night life is more vibrant than I expected. You will not be dissatisfied with your stay. We were pleasantly surprised and you should be, too. "Okay Stay"
Wehn I checked for hotels on hotels.com near TCC in Norfolk, this hotel was lilsted as 1.5 miles away. Well, it was in Portsmouth - big differenece. But the hotel was still quite nice and affordable.
"Great stay"
Hotel staff was quite friendly. The room was neat and clean. Hotel was easy to locate. Good parking space Great maxican restaurant attached to the hotel. I was satisfied with my stay.
"Nice Hotel"
I stay at this hotel several times throughout the year. I love it. It is always clean and the staff is friendly. The prices are very reasonable. It is situated in Old Town Portsmouth with nice shops around it. Much of the area surrounding it has been refurbished. I would recommend it.
"Governor dinwiddle"
We couldnt find a nice hotel in norfolk to stay in, sot he person at hotels recommended we stay at this place. The town was sketchy and the hotel was not great. The hotel staff could not be friendlier but the room linens were OLD. TV and furniture was OLD. And overall the town is not great, or have a safe feel. But maybe one day it will be. Not happy […] about being recco'd to go there. Przeczytaj więcej
"Best organised hotel close to nice restaurants"
This hotel was a really good choise to stay near Norfolk. There are a lot of nice restaurants close to the hotel, check in was well organised and structured, the room was light and clean. Only disadvantage might be for people who wanted to sleep to the late morning: there are a lot of houses in the neighbourhood, which were rebuild and that work makes […] some noise, but we were not affected because we waked up at 7 and the work started around 8 am. "Close to Downtown waterfront"
We were very pleased with the hotel. When we arrived the staff greeted us, the room was clean and very comfortable. It unexpectedly rained and they provided us with an umbrella. Would go back without question and would recommend without hesitation.

"Gov Dinwiddie Hotel & Suites"
I was most pleased with this hotel. Room was large and comfortable and a steal at the price. Good restaurants in walking distance. 'The Still' is exceptional just down the street. Best tapa menu I have come across anywhere.
"This Hotel was very nice"
I enjoyed my stay, however, I reserved a King size room and when I got there the receptionist wanted to move me to a double because of a party without asking if it was okay with me. Well, she then tell sme that none of the King rooms where clean and she wasn't able to change the price so I had a 2 dble bedroom...it was to small for me. Oh...it had […] no pool or spa... :-( Other than that incident I like the hotel. Przeczytaj więcej

Older hotel that's been semi moderized. Location very near to various trendy restaurants and pubs. Hallways have dusty/smokey odor. Free parking. friendly front desk.
"Gov Dinwiddie Hotel - great location! great find"
Right outside our door was everything we went to see and do.....great restaurants, theatre, shops all within walking distance. The hotel itself was a small boutique type hotel from an era gone by, but with modern amenities. Parking lot adjacent and free. Very friendly staff.
Room was large and mostly updated. Window/free standing AC unit was not sufficient to keep the room cool. Slight odor in room. Could not tell if it was from the standing water in the AC unit or from the bathroom. Location was excellent, walking distance to many restaurants etc. Service was prompt.
"Great place to stay"
This hotel is very nice ,the lobby was neat and cozy looking. The room was neat and nice sized .The only problem we had was the water took forever to heat up
"Location"
The best thing at this hotel is the location....if you don't mind parking in a rear lot which does not have security. This hotel rennovation started out great but is slipping quickly. Gedneral maintainance and repairs are needed,
"Not very historic and very average"
The lobby was the most historic looking part of the hotel, and even that was mediocre.
"Past its prime?"
The Governor Dinwiddie was a charming older hotel on the order of the grand old ones of NYC or Europe, but the surrounding blighted area is beginning to encroach upon the property. While maintained well enough, you can tell it was once much finer.
"Great Location but..."
Hotel is in a great location . Several good resturants within easy walking distance, a wine and cheese shop right next to the hotel, a bakery just down the street. On the edge of the lovely historic district. Rate was reasonable. However, they had no record of our reservation. When I produced a printout of the reservation, it took a while but they upgraded […] us to a suite, a very nice accomodation. Breakfast is included but skip it. Restuarant is dingy and breakfast choices were cereal and scrambled eggs and bacon. Przeczytaj więcej

"Outstanding"
The room was clean and comfortable and looked nice. The breakfast in the morning was very good. The only knock was the a/c unit was noisy. Otherwise very good.
"Quaint hotel and restaurant"
We found this hotel to be very quaint. The refurbishing was very authentic and the room was very elegant. The pictures on the web did not show the true feeling. The restaurant within the hotel was awesome. we went for a late dinner , around 9p, and found the food to be fantastic. I had shark bites and she crab soup, and my husband had the tuna sandwich, […] each was better than any seafood restaurant. The waitress was wonderful. The prices were reasonable. Przeczytaj więcej
