"perfect for my needs"
I was pleasantly surprised at the comfort of my room and it was spotless. I had two beds, a bathroom, a little desk, a big Tv and wifi ... what more do you need for a place to sleep? "Be prepared to change rooms more than once."
Overall the hotel isn't horrible, it's definitely not a "nice" hotel by any means, but I wouldn't stay here again. The first room I went to was not bad, until the toilet wouldn't stop running and the air conditioner wouldn't work. Second room, AC worked fine, but there was an overpowering cleaner smell. I tried to manage through it because I hate to […] bother to be moved again, but after the headache started setting in, I gave up and asked to be moved again. Third room, mildew smell. At this point I just gave up and stayed but it wasn't comfortable and I almost considered just making the 220 mile ride home that night. We needed to be near a friend's house so location worked for us. Area felt a bit sketchy-off duty poiceman was there as security and guests needed to be buzzed into lobby after dark for security reasons. We arent too familiar with Durham, but this area seemed a bit sketchy. However, this hotel was clean and a great value. All conveniently located to the highway!

"No Smoking Room Reeked"
The no smoking room reeked of stale smoke and the mattress was hard as a rock.

did not like this place at all. Too bad as it was my first attempt at a Red Roof Inn and I won't be repeating. The room smelled musty. The A/C was poor. The whole experience was grossly underwhelming.

"It's not the RITZ!"
Checking in was somewhat annoying. The front desk clerk was having issues finding clean rooms for the 1 P.M. check-in, which Hotels.com stated on its website. "Red Roof Inn in Durham - A Nightmare"
I booked a non-smoking room, and it smelled of smoke. They tried two other non-smoking rooms for me, but each had a more pungent smoke smell. I was told that patients for the local medical center often stay here with their oxygen tanks & breathing equipment, but I can't see that. The exterior hotel railings have cigarette burn marks. I was booked for […] 5 nights, but they checked me out while I was out during the day after the fourth night. There is no manager on duty during the weekends(?), and only Hotelsdotcom Customer Service was able to get me back into my room and access to my luggage. "A good price for a practical place"
Not walkable to anything interesting but a short drive and near to a major grocery store. This is one of the better locations for access to downtown Durham. No frills, but clean and efficient. Sheets were pretty coarse, and A/C loud and cycling too frequently. Otherwise, no complaints.

Excellent even not considering the great buy it is. Even with pets and the highway nearby (which made it very convenient) it was very quiet. Would go back in a minute. Very clean, people very nice and even coffee & donuts!

"Okay for price"
Room was clean, nice decor, but bed was not comfortable. Good for economy, but not great.

I stayed at this hotel when in town for a funeral. I selected it based on price and proximity to family. I should have spent more money. The room was not even close to clean. The floors appeared unvacuumed - with dirt clumps on the floor. The bathroom had a bug infestation. The bed linens had spots on them. I stayed two nights and housekeeping never […] cleaned anything. The bath linens were not changed, the bed was not made, the bathroom was not cleaned, the trash was not emptied. The irony of it all - behind the reception desk is a certificate giving the hotel a 99.5% cleanliness rating as of February 2011. I should have stayed there in February, because by April it had all gone to tatters. The Red Roof Inn was extremely clean and the staff were helpful and gave me good directions to where I needed to go. The hotel was very convenient to I-85. As others have said, it was a bit noisy, but not too bad between midnight and 8am. For the price, a nice, convenient place to stay.

Overall good experience. Other than the fellow being evicted during my check in, everything went smoothly. The staff was extremely friendly and professional, and the room was clean and well maintained. Great value, especially if you're visiting on an overnight visit to Duke Hospital.

"Not the best part of town"
This place was a little scary (I don't think it's a coincidence that the check-in is through a window with a drawer); I was with three teenage girls, and I was concerned about their safety. Also, it smelled. There are better choices in Durham, I'm sure.

The staff and the hotel was great. The other hotel guests had no home training and were very loud. I didn't say anything until the end of my stay and the staff apologized and explained to me that if I would have told them they would have handled it.

This hotel is THE place to stay for anyone on a budget desiring close proximity to Duke University. It's less than 2 miles away from east campus, a quarter mile away from I-85, and a block away from a 24-hour IHOP and within blocks of other restaurants. The room was nice and clean and we had to bring our dog unexpectedly. They do accept small pets so that was a plus. Staff was very courteous and professional. The hotel was very clost to Duke surgery center. Definitely recommend this hotel.
